A Naturalization Ceremony will kick off the festivities at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a day filled with food, art, music and displays from around the globe.

Celebrate Frederick is happy to announce the following entertainers slated for the 2010 Pangaea Frederick Main Stage:

This year’s opening act is presented by the local non-profit organization, L.I.F.E. & Discovery, who brings a variety of Asian performers to highlight the diversity of the continent’s many cultures. Celebrating not only Pangaea Frederick but also the Asian Heritage Month, the organization integrates the Chinese Dragon Dance with Korean drums, as well as other ethnic performances from countries like Mongolia and India.

Taking over the stage is Trio Caliente, a talented local band from the Washington D.C. area. This sizzling band fuses together elements of Bossa Nova, gypsy rumba and contemporary flamenco with soothing jazz vocals and musical arrangements, which creates unique Latin-flavored sounds. The band has been previously featured on several TV and radio shows, as well as written about in prominent newspapers like the Washington Post and Jazz Times. The band’s worldly musical sensibilities are emphasized through songs sung in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Founded in 1997 by Kwame Ansah-Brew, the Fritete African Drum and Dance Ensemble are committed to preserving and promoting West African cultures through traditional rhythms and dances. The Ensemble focuses on Ghanaian ethnic groupings in particular, performing songs, dances, rhythms and chants with a clear mission of representing that area. The group performed in numerous festivals and concerts, including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the Baltimore Rhythm Festival, and also had the privilege of representing the Royal Drummers of King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II of the Asante Kingdom in 2001.

Based in Baltimore but featured all over the Mid-Atlantic region, the Crawdaddies fuse Cajun, Zydeco, Blues, Ska, Roots, Rock and Reggae to create a groove-laden sound that is unquestionably its own. Their eclectic and “good-time” spirit has attracted audiences across the country, and the Crawdaddies performed in many major festivals including the famous WC Handy Blues Festival in Henderson. The Crawdaddies’ three CDs are in regular rotation on college radio, Internet radio and broad-format “triple A” radio stations world wide.

Mount St. Mary's University Commits to Ethics in Business Pledge

Mount St. Mary's University Commits to Ethics in Business Pledge

Emmitsburg, MD – On March 23, 2010 Mount St. Mary’s University School of Business students, faculty and administration will recite and commit to a business pledge comprised of ethical decision-making with respect to individual and corporate social responsibility.

The Pledge

As a member of the School of Business at Mount St. Mary’s University, I hereby pledge to use my knowledge, skills, and abilities here and in the future, dedicated to a life of virtue consistent with The Lord’s teaching that “unto whom much is given much is expected.”

I will view my life and my work as a calling – a vocation to serve the needs of others and my community. In this role, I will use my God-given talents with enterprise, understanding the importance of the creative role business plays in society, and respectful of the dignity of the human person. I will consider people as well as profits, morality as well as market-share, and service as well as self. In all of this, I accept responsibility for my actions and understand that my actions leave a legacy.

I will accept leadership responsibilities, understanding that to lead is to serve and that the greatest among us must serve the rest. I will reflect before acting, making honorable, ethical and socially responsible choices that truly advance the common good and not merely my own or my organization’s self-interest. I will encourage and support others to demonstrate similar conduct with the faith and understanding that such actions contribute to the greater good.

The Ceremony

“We are excited for the inaugural pledge ceremony. Faith, ethics, responsible business practices and decision-making based on a greater good instead self-interest have always been at the core of our business curriculum here at the Mount,” says President Thomas H. Powell. “This pledge solidifies the Mount’s dedication to shaping ethical leaders.”

After the 2009 formation of the Mount School of Business, President Thomas Powell, along with Business Dean, William Forgang and business students, began discussing the creation of an official business pledge for Mount students and business faculty to follow.

“The turbulent economy of recent years has given witness to the life-altering and global affect business decisions can make. We have seen many ethical and social responsibility violations. Enron and WorldCom are examples but the poor risk management of major financial institutions and the failure of the financial regulatory system raise other issues,” says Dean William Forgang, Mount School of Business. “The pledge behind the School of Business believes in the efficacy of free markets but that free markets are susceptible to corruption and excessive self interest.”

James Brady, a Mount St. Mary’s University Board Trustee Emeritus, former secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development and member of Constellation Energy’s Board of Directors will serve as keynote speaker.

The pledge ceremony will take place in the Cardinal William H. Keeler Dining Room in the Mount’s Patriot Hall at at 3:30 p.m.

The Mount, established in 1808, is the second oldest Catholic university in the nation and well known for its strong business program offering undergraduate and MBA degrees.

Frederick's Most Wanted

INCIDENT SUMMARY: Frederick’s Most Wanted marks its 50th capture

The Frederick Police Department in partnership with the Frederick News Post marked its 49th and 50th captures on March 12th with the arrests of Gregory Wills and Robert Daugherty.

Every other week approximately four persons wanted by the Frederick Police Department or allied agencies are featured in the “Monday Advance” section of the Frederick News Post (which is distributed on Sunday), detailing whom we are seeking and the charges against them.

“This program has been a huge success”, according to Michele Bowman, Community Outreach Coordinator. “We are grateful for the support from the community in getting these criminals off the street.”

The Frederick’s Most Wanted program began in April of 2009 and has featured 80 wanted persons, 50 of them being captured to date. The Most Wanted program idea was a collaboration between several agencies that attend twice monthly CSAFE (Collaborative Supervision and Focused Enforcement) meetings. These meetings are held at the Frederick Police Department with local law enforcement and community partners. The goal of the CSAFE Violence Reduction Initiative is to reduce crime by identifying and monitoring offenders in the area.

The CSAFE program is made possible through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP).

A Priceless Learning Exchange

EMMITSBURG, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University School of Business welcomes Russian professors and students from South Ural State University in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

South Ural’s Marketing and Communications Professor Olga Shabalina and Deputy Dean of International Affairs Dr. Liudmila Shestakova, along with 15 students will visit and stay on the Mount campus beginning the week of March 8, 2010.

The visiting students and faculty will participate in joint projects with Mount business students. Joint faculty workshops are planned along with a series of classroom activities, cultural exchanges and sightseeing tours.

This trip is part of a collaboration which began in the fall of 2008 when Mount students visited South Ural University on a cultural and academic exchange. Last semester Mount Professor Sandra Sjoberg and Professor Shalbalina taught an international marketing class in tandem by using Skype, an internet based conference service. Shalbalina lectured from Russia while Sjoberg lectured from the Mount. Students from both schools simulated a global business team through the class collaboration.

"Having the South Ural University group here at the Mount is a great learning experience and a wonderful collaboration for both universities," says Dr. William Forgang, dean of the Mount’s School of Business. “The combined learning for all involved from international marketing to cultural exchanges will be priceless.”
