Officer Down: Police Officer Richard Bremer - [Frederick, Maryland]

Cause of Death: Vehicle pursuit

Officer Richard Bremer (photo at right) was killed in an automobile accident while pursuing a suspected drunk driver who refused to stop. He was pursuing the suspect down West South Street, shortly before midnight, when dispatchers lost radio contact with him.

Responding officers located his wrecked cruiser minutes later. The suspect he was attempting to stop was located at a nearby hotel and arrested on outstanding warrants.

Officer Bremer had served with the Frederick City Police Department for 5 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Statement of Condolences from Mayor William J. Holtzinger

The City of Frederick, the City Police Department and the community have experienced a great tragedy with the loss of Officer Richard Mark Bremer. On behalf of the Board of Aldermen and the employees of the City of Frederick, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Officer Bremer and the entire Frederick Police Department.

Officer Bremer's service to his community and the City of Frederick was truly outstanding. While no amount of words can make up for this tremendous loss, we are extremely proud of Officer Bremer's outstanding record and his service to the City of Frederick.

The outpouring of support to the Bremer Family is a tremendous tribute to Mark's life. I have no doubt it will continue in the weeks, months and years to come.
