Mount St. Mary's University - Dedication of Veterans' Walkway

Emmitsburg, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University announces the dedication and blessing of Veterans’ Walkway on Saturday June 5, 2010 at 2pm. Veterans’ Walkway is a living monument on the Mount campus, to honor the hundreds of devoted Mount alumni and members of the community who have served in all branches of the military during peace and war-time.

During our third century of service to our church and our nation, it is quite appropriate that we recognize Mount veterans and thank them for their faithful and selfless service,” says Mount President Thomas H. Powell. “The walkway is open to all visitors and provides a place of honor and reflection and will be a daily reminder to us of the sacrifice our enlisted men and women make to preserve the God-given rights of all citizens.”

Construction of Veterans Walkway, located on the north side of the Mount’s Patriot Hall, began during the summer of 2009 and is intended to have a solemn yet active and alive setting. The walkway, adorned with flags dedicated to all branches of U.S. military and the PIO-MIA, houses monuments, granite benches and bricks etched with names of individuals and organizations honored.

The community is invited to become involved with the walkway by visiting, memorializing or honoring a veteran by sponsoring a bench, flag pole, a service plaque or brick.

Distinguished guests of the dedication include keynote speaker and Maryland Congresswoman Beverly Byron, Rear Admiral Thomas F. Brown III (’54) Major General J. Anthony Studds (’60), Most Reverend William Keeler and all military members in attendance.

Mount St. Mary’s University, presently in its 3rd century of Catholic service was established in 1808. The Mount has maintained it mission of educating minds and building leaders through the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, Project Desert Shield, War in Afghanistan and Iraqi War. During the Second World War, the Mount served as a training facility for the Navy. Men lived here at the Mount and were trained and readied for deployment.

Mount St. Mary's University Commits to Ethics in Business Pledge

Mount St. Mary's University Commits to Ethics in Business Pledge

Emmitsburg, MD – On March 23, 2010 Mount St. Mary’s University School of Business students, faculty and administration will recite and commit to a business pledge comprised of ethical decision-making with respect to individual and corporate social responsibility.

The Pledge

As a member of the School of Business at Mount St. Mary’s University, I hereby pledge to use my knowledge, skills, and abilities here and in the future, dedicated to a life of virtue consistent with The Lord’s teaching that “unto whom much is given much is expected.”

I will view my life and my work as a calling – a vocation to serve the needs of others and my community. In this role, I will use my God-given talents with enterprise, understanding the importance of the creative role business plays in society, and respectful of the dignity of the human person. I will consider people as well as profits, morality as well as market-share, and service as well as self. In all of this, I accept responsibility for my actions and understand that my actions leave a legacy.

I will accept leadership responsibilities, understanding that to lead is to serve and that the greatest among us must serve the rest. I will reflect before acting, making honorable, ethical and socially responsible choices that truly advance the common good and not merely my own or my organization’s self-interest. I will encourage and support others to demonstrate similar conduct with the faith and understanding that such actions contribute to the greater good.

The Ceremony

“We are excited for the inaugural pledge ceremony. Faith, ethics, responsible business practices and decision-making based on a greater good instead self-interest have always been at the core of our business curriculum here at the Mount,” says President Thomas H. Powell. “This pledge solidifies the Mount’s dedication to shaping ethical leaders.”

After the 2009 formation of the Mount School of Business, President Thomas Powell, along with Business Dean, William Forgang and business students, began discussing the creation of an official business pledge for Mount students and business faculty to follow.

“The turbulent economy of recent years has given witness to the life-altering and global affect business decisions can make. We have seen many ethical and social responsibility violations. Enron and WorldCom are examples but the poor risk management of major financial institutions and the failure of the financial regulatory system raise other issues,” says Dean William Forgang, Mount School of Business. “The pledge behind the School of Business believes in the efficacy of free markets but that free markets are susceptible to corruption and excessive self interest.”

James Brady, a Mount St. Mary’s University Board Trustee Emeritus, former secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development and member of Constellation Energy’s Board of Directors will serve as keynote speaker.

The pledge ceremony will take place in the Cardinal William H. Keeler Dining Room in the Mount’s Patriot Hall at at 3:30 p.m.

The Mount, established in 1808, is the second oldest Catholic university in the nation and well known for its strong business program offering undergraduate and MBA degrees.

Mount St. Mary's University Teams Up with Campbell's Soup Company

Emmitsburg, MD - Mount St. Mary’s University teams up with the Campbell's Soup Company in the fight to end hunger in the “Let’s Can Hunger Challenge”. The Mount St. Mary’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and Hockey Team have organized a local food drive to collect and donate food to the Emmitsburg Food Bank and feed those who are hungry this Thanksgiving season.

“The Mount Hockey Club, as its service to the community, has been conducting two food drives each year, for Thanksgiving and during Lent, for thirteen years now,” says the Ice Hockey Coach Fr. Jim Donohue. “This year the Mount's School of Business' Dr. Karl Einolf and Dr. Sandra Sjoberg approached me about coordinating our efforts with the SIFE team. It is a great partnership and teaming up together will help us to secure more food for the poor.”

The Mount St. Mary’s campus community plans to make a difference by giving to those who live each day with a little amount of food. The Food Drive will run from November 2nd to November 16th. Collection bins have been placed around campus to place non-perishable food items.

Monetary donations will be accepted from November 9th to November 13th in Patriot Hall.
Hunger is both a global and local issue. One of the biggest social issues facing American today is hunger. There are 35,000,000 Americans who are food insecure. As well as 12.9% of individuals in Emmitsburg who are living below the poverty level.

SIFE has been encouraged by Campbell’s with the “Let’s Can Hunger Challenge!” The challenge focuses on three areas: urgent hunger relief with food drives, lasting hunger relief for more long-term sustainable projects to combat hunger, and hunger education and awareness initiatives.

The Campbell’s Soup Company will be attending the 2009 Symposium on Socially Responsible Investing, held on Monday, November 16th at 7pm in the Mount’s Knott Auditorium. The company will discuss challenges companies face to become and stay classified as being socially responsible. Campbell Soup Company’s mission is "Together we will build the world's most extraordinary food company by nourishing people's lives everywhere, every day." Campbell’s not only sell safe, high-quality products to its customers, but it also implies a responsibility to nourish those people who cannot afford to do so themselves.

Campbell’s is classified as being socially responsible because it is committed to fighting hunger, to creating healthy foods, and to environmental sustainability.

Last year Mount St. Mary’s collected just over 3,000 non-perishable food items. This year they hope to “Can Hunger,” with the challenge to collect even more than last year.
