Child Safety Seats

The Frederick Police Department would like to remind and inform residents, that children under the age of 16 years of age must be secured in either a seatbelt or an approved child safety seat while riding in a vehicle. No person under 16 years of age may ride in the cargo area of any vehicle or pickup truck, at any time.

Any child under the age of 8 years of age, and/or weighing 65 pounds or less, must be securely seated in an approved safety seat. An approved seat may include an infant seat, convertible seat, forward-facing seat, or booster seat.

The Frederick Police Department will be aggressively enforcing these laws over the next few weeks in an attempt to ensure that our kids are safe and secure on our roads. The ultimate goal of this enforcement and public service announcement is “voluntary compliance”. We are asking all residents to take a little extra time to check your child safety seats before driving.

Additional information on the law is available on the web via the State Highway Administration web site at http://www.sha.state.md.us/Safety/oots/trafficsignalsandlaws/childpas.asp or by calling The Frederick Police Department’s non-emergency line and requesting additional information (301.600.2102).
