Purse snatcher arrested

At about 1649 hours on May 1, 2009, Off. Stu Alcorn responded to a theft near Frederick Memorial Hospital. Upon arrival, he met members of Hood College Security and FMH Security. They had detained a man in the 900 block of West 7th Street, who was suspected of stealing a purse from a woman. He was identified as Anthony Daniel Wilkins. The robbery had occurred while the victim was walking on Park Avenue near Hood College.

Ofc. Alcorn contacted the victim, a woman in her 50s who lives in the area. She, along with several other witnesses, positively identified Wilkins as the man who had walked up behind her and pulled her purse away. Also, Wilkins had allegedly pushed the victim to the ground after he robbed her of her purse.

While Wilkins was being detained, he tried to hide a hypodermic syringe in the grass along the curb where he was seated. It was recovered, and it contained a residue which is consistent with heroin.

Ofc. Alcorn re-traced Wilkins’ steps from the scene of the crime to where he was being detained. He found the victim’s purse, and returned to her. Ofc. Alcorn arrested Wilkins (picture right) and charged him accordingly. The District Court Commissioner set a $50,000.00 bond.
